Award for Brave American!

October 3, 2011

Neil Fallon and Skip Madsen celebrate a winning entry!

This summer we were approached by Warren Peterson, the sou chef at the new Tom Douglas Restaurant The Brave Horse Tavern, to come up with a beer that would complement their menu.  He met with Skip and through discussions they decided an American Brown Ale would be the perfect fit.  They even had a great name to blend our two businesses…The Brave American Brown Ale.

It’s been a popular beer at both the restaurant and our tasting room, and so we decided it would be one of the five beers we entered into the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition.  Skip has won with previous entries, ten in fact, when he was the head brewer at Boundary Bay.  But it has been since 2004 since one of his beers has been a selected medal winner at GABF.  Skip had a feeling that this beer was special…

Boy, was it!

The Brave American won the Bronze Medal in the American Brown Ale category!

This year’s GABF was held September 29 – October 1 in Boulder, Colorado.  The number of entries topped last year’s by 11 percent.  GABF remains the largest commercial beer competition in the world, with 3,930 beers vying for medals (compared to 3,523 entries in 2010).

Quick Summary:

  • 466 Breweries in the festival hall
  • 2,375 beers served at the festival
  • 49,000 attendees
  • Approximately 3,300 volunteers
  • 526 breweries in the competition from 48 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico
  • 3,930 beers judged (includes 86 Pro-Am competition entries)
  • 83 style categories judged, plus the Pro-Am competition
  • 167 judges from nine countries
  • Average number of competition beers entered in each category: 48
  • Category with highest number of entries:  176, American Style India Pale Ale
  • 248 Medals awarded
  • 18 first-time entering breweries earn medals (yay, American Brewing Company)
  • The state of Indiana claims winningest entry rate
With the recent installation of two 30 barrel fermenters and one 30 barrel bright tank, we are hoping that Skip will be able to experiment with some more recipes…someone (you) will have to help us taste test these new brews, and, who knows…there might be another award winning beer coming soon!
